The Head Of Department's Message

Welcome to the department of ODEL.

As the Head of Department of ODEL, I am privileged to be at the helm of this unit that seeks to champion for quality teaching.

The department maintains links with the University of Zimbabwe through its ODEL programme.

In August 2021 the University of Zimbabwe enrolled intake 1 of the new Bachelor of education Honours degree program. The program runs under a more than 10 year- old MOU between the University of Zimbabwe and each of the three secondary school colleges; Belvedere, Hillside and Mutare. The university enrolls students through the three colleges. Initially this was envisaged virtual university for online learning with broadcast lectures to the centres and materials would be supplied to students in electronic form. Tutors at the centres would assist students to interact with the learning materials as well as conduct practical work in their respective subject areas; Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. From 2021 new subjects have been added namely Computer Science and Geography.

Bachelor of Education (Hons) Science Education and Applications (BEDSEA) programme has six options where students can specialize in namely:

Biology (BEDSEAB)

Chemistry (BEDSEAC)

Computer Science (BEDSEACS)

Geography (BEDSEAG)

Mathematics (BEDSEAM)

Physics (BEDSEAP)

The duration for the programme is three (3) years. In order for one to be accepted in this degree programme he/she should possess at least 5 “O” level passes including English Language, Mathematics, and a science subject. Secondly, should have a Diploma in Education, in a relevant area of study or a relevant qualification as stipulated in the Zimbabwe National Qualifications Framework (ZNQF). All ODeL students must apply through college in this case (Mutare Teachers College) and all applications addressed to the principal of the college. Currently, we have got the August intakes only. As a college, we are happy to have this porgramme as it increases our relationship with the University of Zimbabwe. It also easy the way students get education degrees regionally from University of Zimbabwe through Mutare Teachers College since students would save transport costs travelling to main campus. Students are motivated to do Diploma in Education at our college as they will proceed to degrees smoothly through ODeL programme. All the examinations and tutorials are done at Mutare Teachers' College instead of travelling to the University of Zimbabwe in Harare.
